What is Gateway snap

What is Gateway Snap-in Security?

What is gateway snap in security? The Snap-on Secure Vehicle Gateway™ is intended to assist you in navigating this new process. As other OEMs adopt similar network protection technology, the Snap-on Secure Vehicle Gateway will assist you in managing multiple OEM accounts for direct vehicle network access from the tool.

How to Improve Vehicle Cybersecurity

1. OEMs should implement the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and the Automotive-NIST Cybersecurity Information Exchange

2. OEMs should provide vehicle software with periodic security updates

3. OEMs should implement a secure over-the-air system like the Snap-on Secure Vehicle Gateway™

4. OEMs should provide cybersecurity training to their dealers and mechanics

5. The Federal Government can encourage cybersecurity improvement through regulation, funding, and research

Why is Vehicle Cybersecurity Important?

Vehicle cyber-attacks are rapidly evolving and becoming more sophisticated, costly, and dangerous. Here are reasons why you should consider vehicle cybersecurity:

1. Hackers are getting more proactive.

Hackers are actively targeting vehicles and can cause serious damage or injuries to vehicle occupants by accessing and manipulating the networked systems.

2. The industry is vulnerable.

The vehicle manufacturers are adopting new technologies but are not yet adapting to the cybersecurity threats facing their industry.

3. The cost of an attack is rising.

The cost of cyber-attacks is quickly adding up for individuals, organizations, and governments. For example, in the first half of 2017, a hacker could buy access to 1.4 million vehicles for less than $100 from a website that sold stolen passwords and account information.

3. Vehicle cyber-attacks can impact other critical infrastructure systems.

Smaller and less expensive devices, like those in vehicles, are becoming more accessible to hackers as they get smarter and cheaper to make. The number of interconnected devices and networks makes it difficult to secure them all.

The risk of attack becomes greater when these smaller devices can be hacked remotely or manipulated via the larger Internet-of-Things (IoT). A hacker’s ability to control a car’s entertainment system by accessing the data on its radio system illustrates how an attack on a device connected through a network can have dangerous effects on other devices connected to it.

4. Cybersecurity is critical for the future of transportation.

The Department of Transportation has called for the U.S. motor vehicle industry to become “seamlessly interoperable” and “fully connected” by 2020 so that vehicles can communicate with each other, other road users, and infrastructure, creating a safer transportation experience for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike.

5. Creating a centralized network is “the secret sauce”

The Snap-on Secure Vehicle Gateway™ is intended to provide the vehicle OEM’s direct connection to the dealer and mechanic. The Gateway enables the OEM to monitor and control the vehicle’s software updates and monitor its cybersecurity posture, from a centralized and secure location.

Wrapping Up!

Vehicle security is a challenge for the industry. The Snap-on Secure Vehicle Gateway is intended to provide the vehicle OEM’s direct connection to the dealer and mechanic. The Gateway enables the OEM to monitor and control the vehicle’s software updates and monitor its cybersecurity posture from a centralized and secure location.
